- General Employment Permit applications – all types of employment are eligible unless excluded under the list of Ineligible Categories of Employment for Employment Permits.
- Critical Skills Employment Permit – eligible occupations are deemed critical to the proper functioning and development of the Irish economy and are determined according to labour market requirements in Ireland which are regularly examined and updated by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. The list of eligible occupations for a Critical Skills Employment Permit is set out in the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List. The Occupations strategically important to the economy such as ICT professionals, professional engineers and technologists are usually catered for under this type of employment permit.

- Work permits for carers in Private Home – a person can apply for a General Employment Permit where the person who requires the care has a severe medical condition and the prospective carer is a trained medical professional or where it can be demonstrated that the applicant has a long history of caring for the person requiring the care.
- Contract for Services Employment Permit – this type of employment permit is relevant where a foreign Contractor has won a contract to provide services to an Irish entity on a contract for services basis and is intended to facilitate the transfer of non-EEA employees to work on the Irish contract in Ireland.
- Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit – to facilitate the transfer of senior management, key personnel or trainees who are non-EEA nationals from an overseas branch of a multinational corporation (Foreign Employer) to its Irish branch
- Internship Employment Permits – permits the employment in the State of foreign nationals who are full-time students, enrolled in a third level institution outside the State, for the purpose of gaining work experience in Ireland in one of the areas of employment specified in the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List.
- Reactivation Employment Permits – covers situations where a foreign national has entered the State on a valid Employment Permit but is no longer legally resident in the State or who has been badly treated or exploited in the workplace, wishes to apply to work legally again.
- Restaurant or Take-Away Work Permits – employments as executive chefs, head chefs, sous chefs or specialist chefs, each of whom are specialising in a cuisine originating in a state which is not a Member State of the EEA, may be considered for a Critical Skills, General or Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit.
